the sling diaries: communication.

This months theme is communication, which in my opinion, is one of the best things about babywearing. Having Luna right next to me provides a perfect opportunity for talking to her about the things we see and smell. Ocean started talking very quickly and clearly, I attribute that to the fact that she was in a carrier for 85% of her infant hood. (Almost 100% of the time we spent away from the house)

According to Dr. William Sears, one benefit of baby wearing is that "Infants are "humanized" earlier by developing socially. Babies are closer to people and can study facial expressions, learn languages faster and be familiar with body language."

It just comes naturally to talk with your little one when they are close. While thrifting I like to point out things to Luna (like I did with Ocean) and talk to her about it. Nothing particularly profound, just little things here and there.

If I notice something particularly bright its fun to talk about the colors. Anything that excites me tends to make Luna smile.
Anytime we walk by a mirror I have to stop and give Luna a chance to get excited about her reflection. This is typically accompanied by "Do you see that baby Luna? Look at that cute baby!"

Picking blueberries, telling Luna "No pink, only blue!" She just smiles at me like she really gets it.

Aside from the benefits for baby, it is so nice for me to have someone right there to talk with. I feel so confident with a little one on my hip. It feels so right. So natural. Oh and the little older ladies love it. I get stopped several times, anywhere we go...the most repeated phrase a lady used again today, she leaned in close to Luna and patted her head saying "Girl, you've got the best seat in the house"

  1. These are great photos! I completely agree---it is important to involve children with life's beautiful little details. My first is five months and I have really enjoyed wearing him. We switched from a Sleepy Wrap to a Wallababy sling as soon as he gained head control. I feel like we equally enjoy it.

  2. I was wearing my daughter around the hospital and an older woman looked at me and said "Well aren't you just smart!"

  3. do you think you could do a video on how you put it on/wear yours? Or do you know a good video. I seem to struggle with mine, especially once she gets tired and wants to sleep bc she prefers to lay down more than sit straight up against me

  6. I seriously love this! I am not a mama (yet) but when the time comes this is something I will definitely be considering... :)
Just a question, but I notice you say 100% when out of the house, but what do you do at home, e.g. do you carry Luna with you around the house all the time? If not, how do you keep her reasonably close? Just curious, as this seems a much more friendly method, rather than the stroller approach... :)

  7. I feel the same way about how keeping them close makes me feel more confident--whenever someone is talking to me I find myself just looking at the baby whenever I feel uncomfortable. LIke I have this little best friend I can cringe with! Ha! Really sweet post. Makes me want to get out thrifting with my little ones too. :)
