nature is calling.

Oh, my soul. I need this so badly. I'm hoping to borrow a tent soon so we can make this a reality.

Of course, my soul is really longing for some alone time with Marc but I daydream about having our girls with us too. We have been going to a local lake here recently and getting away with them has been so wonderful. It's really secluded and just blissful. You can rent a camping spot there so we are planning something for an upcoming weekend.

Got any great camping tips? I went camping a lot growing up but havent been in years and this will be our girls first time so I could use some good ones. Also, cheap and easy meals? Send them this way!

So yeah, thats my heart right now. Daydreaming about this time away from everything and focusing on my family.

xoxo

  1. I don't think I'm a camper...a week in a wigwam in cornwall once still haunts me...but I'll do it for festivals :)

  2. I LOVE camping! My husband and I try to go every year for our anniversary. Real, backpack-in, tent camping. This is my favorite camping recipe:

    Chicken and Dumplings (http://www.onepanwonders.com/dinners.htm)
1 7 ounce foil pouch chicken (or cooked rotisserie chicken, if you'll have a cooler)
    2 1/4 cups Bisquick mix
    1 teaspoon dried parsley
    3 teaspoons chicken bouillon
1 tablespoon dried veggie flakes (optional)
    1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
    1/2 teaspoon celery salt
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

At home: put the Bisquick, and parsley in a zip locking plastic bag. In a second bag
put the remaining ingredients. Carry the chicken pouch seperately.

In camp: bring 3 cups of water to a boil, add the broth/veggie mix. Reduce heat and
keep simmering. Add the chicken. Meanwhile, make the dumplings by adding 2/3 cup
of water to the bag of Bisquick. Zip shut and squish to combine well. Snip off a corner
off the bag and squeeze out dumplings. Let them simmer, covered, for a couple of minutes
or until they puff up and float to the top.

  3. I've been longing to camp too! We're just waiting for the weather to cool down more so we aren't totally miserable. A few weeks ago we had a "practice run" and Eliza and I camped in my dad's backyard. Shish kabobs of vegetables is always good! And you can do them right over a fire. Oh and I suggest you bring extra blankets, just in case someone hogs them all (:

  4. "Hobo Packs" are a staple for our trips. Bring any assortment of veggies and protein (I chop them before we go) and any hot sauce, vinegar or spices you like then place them in a foil pouch (make sure it is a few layers thick) then place in coals for 15-20 min. It is super easy and as cheap as can be with minimal clean up!!

Also our favorite breakfast is a Brussels sprout hash with apple cider vinegar and maple bacon :)!

  6. Lots of layers, both in clothing and in bedding... take lots of sweaters and blankets... the temperature can fluctuate in the tent, and also outside once you get the campfire going, so layers are the most effective way to be prepared for all eventualities... :)

  7. We just took our 10 month old and 2 1/2 year old camping for the first time. The baby didn't make it, it was just too cold. The 2 1/2 year old was changed forever.

  8. Food: there are a lot of "just add water" meals in your regular grocery store, so no need to buy fancy camping food. don't waste your money! things like rice and bean mixes, mac n cheese, oatmeal, eggs. use oil instead of butter for most things. Jello "No-Bake" cheesecakes are awesome made with just water and oil sitting at a picnic table :)

  9. Oh girl you know who to call about this ;)

I like to get fish, a bunch of lemons limes and any veggies pre cut... wrap it up in foil- stick it by the edge of the fire embers until its done!
Fruit is always a must... and crunchy stuff! Joe has a little stove we use and we can cook ANYTHING.
Basically have a dry bag for dry goods and a cooler for eggs/milk/beer/fish/water!
Tent/pillows/blankets (bring more than you think you will need!!)/towel/sock/something to sit on..
    Insect repellent is a must....

We should go camping together! It would be so much fun!

  11. Oh my goodness I have been daydreaming of camping for months as well! It is such a perfect time of year to experience the outdoors, cool starry nights, bonfires, changing leaves and waking up with the sun. A few things I love having is a good sweater, blankets, camera, Iron skillet for cooking a yummy meal at dinner and of course bacon and pancakes in the morning! A french press for coffee.. a must have for me! My husband and I like to take cards a bev of choice and midnight snack to enjoy by the fire late into the evening. A good trail mix or granola is lovely to have around for snacking, I have been LOVING this recipe!!!!!

    Honey Almond Granola
    3 cups old-fashioned oats (9 ounces)
1 cup sliced almonds with skin (1/4 pound)
    6 tablespoons coconut oil
    6 tablespoons local honey
    1 teaspoon ground cardamom
    1/2 cup dried cranberries
    1/2 cup dried blueberries

Hope you get to go soon!!!!

  12. It sounds so simple, but PB&J!! My boyfriend and I ate this almost exclusively at the coachella festival this past spring. We threw an old mattress in the back of his truck and snuggled up to brave the Indio desert cold. We thought we'd get sick of the PB&J but we didn't!!! The protein kept us full, jelly gave us energy, and best of all it required no refrigeration/fuss!

  13. Camping appeals to me because it *looks* so dreamy sometimes in photographs, but the reality of it scares the crap out of me haha. The idea of spending time, out in the "wild" with my family doing all sorts of fun camp-y things , sleeping under the stars, etc sounds beautiful though. My family used to go camping once or twice a year when I a kid, so I'm not sure why the idea of it completely freaks me out now. Enjoy your time away! I'm sure your little girls will appreciate the memories as they grow.

  14. I am excited to hear about your camping trip with your family! I would love to take my family out into the wild and spend quality time there. (we hike when we can, but that ends up being a one day cardio/strength test) The memories made doing these things are irreplaceable! I have no tips because I haven't done this, ever. Good luck lady! :) xoxo

  15. Jared and I took McKenna camping in Helen,GA 3 weeks ago. It was really a lot of fun. For dinners we mostly cooked meat, veggies and seasonings in foil packets on the coals. For breakfasts we mostly did egg and chorizo burritos. Lunch we just snacked/ate last night's leftovers.

Also, I have a 4 man tent that you can borrow if you'd like :)
