clean beauty: hair.

A lot of you have asked about my hair routine and I thought I would update the clean beauty series to include hair products because I finally found one to rave about!

I had been wanting to try it for awhile after seeing amazing reviews for it and got lucky, it was on sale at Whole Foods with another coupon stuck to the bottle. So here is where I am going to rave a little. I love this shampoo! (!!!!!!) No, I was not paid or compensated, or sent a bottle to review, I just sincerely love this stuff.
Here's why:
  • first, natural/organic
  • fair trade
  • it actually lathers so well, my hair feels clean afterwards (this is sometimes a problem in natural shampoos and such).
  • it doesn't strip my hair like others seem to, so it doesn't end up sticky feeling
  • after using it my hair feels and looks smoother and my curls are more defined

I bought this Argan Oil shampoo (for dry/curly hair) and bought Marc the quinoa protein shampoo (for thin/fine hair). Both do what they claim. Marc really loves his shampoo as well. The only shampoo I have ever used that I compare in quality to this one is Broo (a beer shampoo).
I bought this coconut oil from Whole Foods last trip. It should last me quite awhile. It was 30 oz for $20 (which is a pretty good deal!).
This Embrace Messy Hair print has been retired but it is from this Etsy shop.
This hair brush made a huge difference. The wooden bristles don't generate static like plastic bristles do. My hair always brushes smoother and maintains the curl.
Face wash is a bar of natural soap. My favorite to use are the ZUM bars but they are more costly than others. We use Eco-Dent tooth powder and Preserve toothbrushes (they come in a package that you reuse to mail them back to the manufacturer to be recycled, postage paid!) The hair spray is Giovanni in LA HOLD. Marc has been using it for years.

So there you have it! Feel free to ask any questions!

  1. Sounds silly, but what do you use your coconut oil for? Just moisturization, or do you have other uses for it? I recently jumped on the coconut oil rain for moisturization purposes and fell in love, but I'd love to find more uses for it.

    1. Oh man! So many things.

Primarily as a moisturizer for my face, I use the little leftover on my hands to rub through my hair after a shower.

I put it in smoothies and use it to cook with as well!

  2. a. I've already put that shampoo in my amazon shopping cart... or perhaps I'll run to whole foods after work if I have time. I'm always looking for a good natural, moisturizing shampoo for my curls.. (not that you see them much when my hair's this short, but I digress)

    b. I really want to know more about that tooth powder! I'm tempted to order it as well just to try it, but I've never used a powder before.

    c. I know you're thinking of chopping your locks, but your long hair is my hair goal. You really have beautiful hair.

Let me know how it goes if you use it! It was a noticeable difference for me!

  4. Yessiree, thanks for this. I've used some shea butter curly-hair shampoos, and they leave my hair feeling plastered and greasy. I've got curly/wavy/sometimes straight hair (all in one day...) and it's nice to see what other people do, naturally, for their hair.

Do you like that hairspray? My curls fall out a day or two after washing and I'd like to re-wet them and add some kind of spray/gel thing, but I haven't found it yet.

  6. Ohhh I just love reading posts like this! I'm really glad you updated. After reading so many of your other posts about all natural shampoo, I finally went back to Avalon Gardens. I recently stopped though because of some of the above reasons. I didn't feel like it lathered at all, and I have really long hair so I wanted it to easily spread when washing. Also, it didn't always feel clean, but more tacky almost? Anyways, I may have to try this new one out! :)
I'm really curious about these face bars of soap. They don't break you out at all? Do you notice any specific differences because of the goat milk? I may be stopping by Good Earth tomorrow...thanks!! :)

  7. How does the tooth powder work as far as distributed it to your toothbrush? Do you just tap some out? I'm going to make my own powder soon, but don't know how to actually get it on my toothbrush! haha

And coconut oil? My favorite 'product' ever! Face, body, food, teeth...it's great for everything!

  8. I use a wonderful organic, sulfate free shampoo by Ren Organics. It's Argan Oil, too and it's done wonders for my hair. i love it. I use the conditioner, too. I make my own toothpowder but this has a whitener built in, so added bonus. However, baking soda mixed with peroxide works really well for whitening. For the above comment, I put a little bit of the toothpowder on the lid of the jar and wet my brush then dip it in. Kinda messy, but worth it.

    1. Great! I was worried about my husband and I repeatedly dipping on wet brushes in the powder dish.

  9. Oh you've completely convinced me to try that shampoo... and I was already at Whole Foods once today! Ha! Seriously though, if it helps tame my thick and frizzy waves I will forever be grateful. Loved this post xo
